IUAA Outdoor Championships 2019
UCC Athletics had a very successful weekend at the IUAA Outdoor Championships 2019.
We had a number of athletes competing in across a broad range of events over the two-day competition. Louise Shanahan produced a fantastic performance in the women’s 800m final to take the victory in a time of 2:13.76, while Aoife Delargy finished a superb 6th. In the 4x100m relay our women’s team was just out of the medals finishing 4th, comprising of Shona Lowe, Katie Murphy, Laura Quigley, and Laura Cussen. In the field events, our women’s team also performed strongly. Laura Cussen finished 3rd in the women’s long jump with a jump of 5.56m, narrowly missing the silver medal on countback to Queen’s University’s Lydia Mills. Maria Carey jumped 11.24m in the triple jump to claim second. In the pole vault, we won two medals with Ciara Hickey taking silver with a UCC record of 3.40m and Úna Samuels taking the bronze medal.
UCC also took gold in the men’s 800m with Cillian Kirwan displaying sheer determination to win in 1:53.54. Meanwhile, in the steeplechase John Neville finished a respectable 9th and Ruairi Kennedy finished 3rd in the 3000m walk. In the 5000m Micheal Power narrowly missed out on a medal placing 5th. David Cussen claimed the bronze medal in the men’s long jump and silver in the high jump with 1.90m.
Overall, both men and women’s teams performed excellently over the two days after a long season of hard training. Of course, this wouldn’t have been possible without our committed coaches Massimo Tozzi, Donie Walsh and John Sheehan who supported each and every athlete along the way. Lastly, a special thanks to AIT for hosting the fantastic event. We look forward to next year’s season!
