Irish Universities vs. Scottish Universities vs. Scottish Selects Match

Nine UCC athletes made the trip to Grangemouth, Scotland for the Irish Universities vs. Scottish Universities vs. Scottish Selects Match.

It is the second consecutive year that such a competition has been held, after a hiatus since 2005. Last year’s match was held in Tallaght, Ireland.

Clare Fitzgerald was the star for UCC, winning two events, the shot putt and discus.

Edmond O’Halloran finished third in the 110m hurdles (15.6sec), but was the top collegian. He also was on the 4x100m relay team that finished second.

James Grufferty finished third in the 5,000m (15:17), and was top collegian.

Jessica Neville placed third in the 400m hurdles (63.0sec), then came back to finish fourth in the 200m (25.92sec), and second in the 4x400m relay.

Christine Neville finished fourth in the flat 400m (58.47sec), second with the 4x400m relay squad, and was on the 4x100m relay team that unfortunately disqualified.

Ciara Cronin grabbed a bronze medal in the 800m (2:20).

In the field events, Eoin Kelly placed second in the long jump (6.89m), and again second in the triple jump (14.14m), but top collegian.

Patrick McSweeney finished fourth in the shot putt (11.39)

Clare Fitzgerald and Niamh Murphy went 1-2 in the shot putt with throws of 13.79m and 12.56m respectively. Clare then came back to win the discuss by a good margin, throwing 49.29m.

Overall, the men bested their Scottish University counterparts, while the women were narrowly defeated. As a whole, Ireland won the day versus the Scottish Universities.
